Self Insurers operate throughout various states in Australia and are subject to rigrous scrutiny by the regulatory authorities in terms of their approach to occupational health and safety and workers' compensation management. Since 1994 there have been numerous inquiries into these aspects of industry. The Productivity Commission carried out the last of these in 2004 (refer to the inquiry report on the useful links page).
Self Insurers are at the forefront of developing a best practice approach to managing their exposures in terms of worker's compensation and implementing prevention through safety management systems.
There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction. John F. Kennedy
